The Pension
My well-kept pension in the valley of Vathys sits on the mountain side approx. 30 m above the small village of Rina. From here you have unique and stunning panoramic views across the entire valley, over the village of Rina and the harbour, with the open sea and Turkish hills shimmering in the distance.
Life is wonderfully free and easy here- you can start your day in relaxed style and carry on just as you please. Go for a refreshing swim, dip into a good library, take a hike in the hills or a boat trip to isolated beaches. Or just take a gentle stroll and get to know the friendly inhabitants of our valley. These choices, and more, will make your holiday in my pension the most enjoyable and relaxing experience to be found anywhere in Greece.
You will meet other guests from all over the world as well as friends of mine from the valley.
Strangers become friends fast...
Many guests come back year after year and look forward to meet up with the friends waiting here for them !

Facilities
There are 6 double-rooms, each with shower/toilet, air condition and all with own terrace area. Every room offers a beautiful view over the entire valley, village or harbour. Every room has central heating for the cool season.
Room no. 3 and 4 have a vast shared balcony as well as a terraced area . The Pension is surrounded by terraces with sun and shade. I have quite deliberately dispensed with TV and telephones in the rooms. Who has not been irritated by ringing phones and loud TV's in neighbouring rooms? However there is a good signal for your mobile phone. For the conservation of our environment, towels and bedlinen will be changed approx. every 4-5 days. Of course you can have new linen on request. Beach towels are not provided - please bring your own from home.
The large, communal kitchen has gas stove, sink, and fridge, is fully equipped with china, glassware and cutlery, and has a host of tables and chairs available for your use. Around the house are several terraces with garden furniture, partially shaded by magnificent grape-vines.
Please feel free to wander around my large gardens wherever you want and to taste the fruit and herbs which are growing there.
It took 190 tons of soil to turn the rocky landscape into a fertile garden. Now you will find lemon-, orange-, tangerine-, olive-, almond-, fig-, guave-, banana-, bay leaf-, avocado- and papaya-trees, kiwi, passion fruit, grapes, cactus fruit, oregano, sage, thribi and thyme, to name only a few! More and more varieties are added each year to make this garden a little paradise.
You also can find abundant flowers and blooms.

A swim in the harbour bathing area is five minutes away if you walk down the narrow footpath near the garden gate. The village square with its shopping and eating facilities is also only three minutes away. Here you will find traditional tavernas and well stocked mini-markets, groceries, kiosks and a pastry shop, in fact everything for your daily needs. The local petrol-station and doctor are all in the village of Platanos, just one kilometer away.
How to find Pension Manolis in Vathys
- Arriving in Vathys from Pothia, follow the signposts down the valley to Rina.
- Once in Rina, you will come across three mini-markets on the left-hand side of the main-road. Opposite the second of these you turn right into a narrow alley.
- Turn left immediately just behind the first house into an even narrower alley on the left, running behind the buildings in the main road.
- Follow this alley up to the blue gate of the pension ( approx . 500ft)
season
Pension Manolis is open all-season. Every room has central heating for the cool season.
Especially springtime and late autumn are wonderful travel seasons for Kalymnos. From the middle of march to the beginning of june the island is marvellously green, the temperatures are like early central-European summer and like central-European summer from beginning of may. It is the best season for hiking and sightseeing! Also September to end of Oktober are perfect for hiking. Because the island is not geared touristy primarily, the island is often more busy in the peak-off-seasons than the peak season.
For example, the golden opportunity arises, to experience greek-orthodox Easter, the most important celebration in greece. The whole island is celebrating for 5 days (Attention: The date is not the same like the northern european date!)
For northern europeans swimming at the sea is comfortable from beginning of May to end of November.
